Pastoral

‘Care and guidance for all learners is outstanding’ and ‘Provision for pastoral care is outstanding’

(Ofsted Nov 2006 & Diocesan Section 48 Inspection 2007)

Our system of pastoral care means that every learner has a number of people to turn to when they need support; teachers, nurses, teaching assistants, inclusion support leaders, therapists and residential care staff - to name a few!

St. Joseph’s approach to pastoral care and support plays a critical role in helping learners to:

* remove barriers to learning, particularly inappropriate behaviours and emotional difficulties

* kick start learning and achievement

* increase in confidence and motivation to make good choices

* increase their independence

Staff always put the needs of learners first and take a genuine interest in their achievements. This has resulted in excellent relationships between staff and learners.

Learners say that if they feel angry or sad they can talk to anyone and that staff are kind and listen.

A parent says, “the welcome of a caring, genuine Catholic community enables the children to feel secure enough to learn.” (SEN Good School Guide 2007)

In addition to the PSHCEE programmes, in all Key Stages, individual and group pastoral sessions are led by our Pastoral Assistant, Sr. Kathleen. These sessions are personalised to each group or individual learner. They are a specific and planned means of helping learners to value themselves and to experience well-being.
